I would like to protect my 3.5’ Escallonia hedge around my patio from winter dieback, if possible (it was hit hard last year but mainly recovered). I have cut the tallest new shoots back to hard wood and would like to mulch the soil. Which mulch would be best for insulation - leaves?, bark mulch? Should I cover the hedge with burlap? n-Sulate? Next year I will probably get a lattice fence on one side of the hedge for more protection.
