October 21, 2024 AGM with Speaker Dr. Thierry Vrain – All About Soil

We had a great turnout, via Zoom and in person, at our 47th AGM last night. Huge thank you’s to all the volunteers that contribute to the success of our society and provide all the great content throughout the year–workshops, open garden tours, the summer social and excellent speakers at our meetings are just a few of the fabulous events that are provided—all for only $20 a year.

Also discussed at the meeting was the vacancy of a few volunteer positions. We are looking for:

• Open Garden Tour Chair/Co-Chairs
• Membership Chair/Co-Chairs
• Program Chair/Co-Chairs
• Director at Large - Board Position

If you are interested in horticulture, the CVHS is a fabulous and very rewarding way to learn and share information with other folks that have the same green passions. Contact us at info@comoxvalleyhortsociety.ca for further information.

We also enjoyed a fascinating talk from Dr. Thierry Vrain who, with assistance from some excellent videos, helped us understand the myriad of life that exists beneath our feet. 10 square feet of a mature forest contains:

• 30 kilometers of roots to feed 10 trillion bacteria and hundreds of kilometers of fungal hyphae
• 10 billion Protists
• 5 million Nematodes
• 100,000 Mites
• 50,000 Springtails
• 10,000 Rotifers and Tardigrades
• 5,000 Insects, Myriapods, Spiders, Diplurans
• 3,000 Potworms and Earthworms
• 100 Snails/Slugs
• 1 Vertebrate

Amazing.
