July 19, 2026 – Open Garden Tour, Lazo North, Comox
No one would have guessed what lay behind the massive, perfectly clipped cedar hedge on Sunday’s Open Garden Tour. Rounding the corner from the driveway into the backyard, visitors were transported to the tropics. Two huge banana trees stood surrounded by bright red pelargoniums, purple agapanthus, aeoniums and other succulents, and orange daylilies in peak bloom.
Further into the garden, distinct beds offered a beautiful contrast of light and shade. The shade gardens were filled with ferns, hydrangeas, fatsia, heuchera, and hostas, while the sunny beds featured a lively mix of Verbena bonariensis, dahlias, veronicas, liatris, sedum, nepeta, lavender, and beautiful, flowing grasses. The diverse landscape even included a woodland garden, a grassy meadow, a bamboo hedge, espaliered fruit trees, and a grape arbour.
Thoughtfully placed seating areas offered prime sightlines throughout the property. It was wonderful to see so many of these chairs occupied by members—a true testament to this being a space where people truly wanted to linger. Many thanks to Fran for hosting our club and sharing this spectacular one-acre property, where her wish to achieve the “perfection of imperfection” has been reached.
