CVHS Summer Fruit Tree Pruning Workshops Recap

Our two Summer Fruit Tree Pruning workshops, led by certified arborist Read Guthrie of Red Goose Pruning Co., brought members together for an enjoyable and informative day in a beautiful orchard featuring both large mature fruit trees and younger 4–6-year-old trees. We even had a few curious chickens nearby keeping us company throughout the day!

Read did an excellent job explaining the benefits of summer pruning, demonstrating techniques, discussing tree health, and answering the many thoughtful questions from participants. His practical approach made the topic accessible to gardeners of all experience levels, and members left with greater confidence to apply these skills in their own gardens. Two comments from Read are sure to stick with us: “Approach the tree with a purpose” and “Mulch will save the world.”

A sincere thank you to our generous orchard hosts, Linda and Dave Page, for welcoming us onto their property and providing the perfect setting for the workshops.

Although there was less opportunity for hands-on pruning than we had hoped, the overwhelmingly positive feedback suggests this could become an annual event. Next time, we’re considering a slightly longer workshop that would allow members to refresh their pruning knowledge, ask questions, connect with fellow gardeners, and spend time putting what they’ve learned into practice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Read for sharing his knowledge so generously. Until next year, remember to approach your tree with a purpose… and don’t forget to mulch!

It was very helpful, I learned a lot. And will be putting it to good use on my young plum trees in the next few days! Thank you.
