The recent showers and overcast skies gave us the perfect backdrop for our final scheduled tour of the season–the incredible colours of the dahlias were absolutely popping! Members and guests were treated to a stunning variety of blooms in this incredibly well cared for flower farm.
A massive thank you to sisters Sherry and Jeanine for welcoming us into their garden—they have been growing dahlias for nearly 40 years! They currently tend to over 400 varieties, including a bunch of their own unique hybrids. They also grow and sell roses and peonies but dahlias
were definitely the star of the show today.
A bit about the dahlia growing process:
. Every autumn, all those dahlias are dug up, washed, cured for a month, divided, and tucked away in damp sawdust for the winter.
. To amend their soil, they used to rely on manure until portulaca weeds (present in the manure) crashed the party. Now, they are using cover crops like fava beans, buckwheat, and field peas, with plans to try a “lasagna garden” composting system next.
