Thank you to Comox Valley’s very own Duchess of Dirt, Leslie Cox, for her wonderful talk and gorgeous photos at last night’s meeting. It was fantastic to see such a huge variety of plantings that produce such interest in the garden as we wind down into Fall. Of course, all these plants can be grown right here in our Valley (Leslie’s garden is in Black Creek).
Here are some of the plants Leslie discussed that will provide stellar Fall colour :
-
Cotinus (Smoketree), Rhus typhina (staghorn sumac), Sambucus nigra “Black Lace” (Elder), Acer griseum (paperbark maple), Stewartia pseudocamellia, Norway maple and Kerria japonica, Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ (redbud tree), Physocarpus Diablo (Ninebark), Indigofera heterantha (Himalayan indigo).
-
Helenium “Morheim Beauty” (sneezeweed), Scarlet Women “Cambridge Scarlet”, Lilium ‘Casablanca’, Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’, Crocosmia, Salvia ssp., Eucomis bicolor (pineapple lily), Schizostylis (kaffir lily), many dahlias including ‘Black Knight’ and ‘Donna’, Impatiens omeiana (hardy impatiens), Trycirtic hirta (hairy toad lily), Fuchsia magellanica var. gracillus ‘Aurea’, Anemone ‘September Charm’, peonies.
-
Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ (Japanese Forest Grass), Panicum virgatum ‘Rehbraun’, Miscanthus ‘Cosmopolitan’, Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’, Miscanthus sinesis ‘Gracillimus’, Adiantum pedatum (Maidenhair fern), Darmera peltata (umbrella plant), Fothergilla gardenii (coastal fothergilla), Amsonia illustris (shining bluestar), Bergenia cordifolia (pigsqueak), Actea simplex purpurea (bugbane), Virginia creeper, Euphorbia griffithii ‘Fireglow’, Heuchera ‘Palace Purple’, Cotoneaster.
We also enjoyed viewing and voting for our favourite display of plants from our members’ gardens. Congratulations to Janelle G. who received the most votes for her display of Verbena, Echinops, Agastache, Yarrow, Lavendar and Echinacea.
