does anyone have advice on how to permanently get rid of an ant nest in the middle of a flower border?
Well, there are the available ant baits that work, though they take time. Of course you can use a pesticide that will work very quickly, but that is your choice.
Ants like sandy, dry soil. Changing that will take more time and effort, and may not totally work. Of course living with them is also an option. Though we have ants in our house at the moment, so I am trying to dissuade them!

I have found that cornmeal sprinkled liberally around the area seems to work. They can’t digest it and they perish. Plus it’s not a chemical; not harmful to plants, pets or people.
