Mature Hazelnut trees

Would like feedback on what months are best to remove large limbs from mature Hazelnut(Filbert nut) tree. Also should it have them removed at base or just lower near a side branch.

We have prune ours in the winter months after December. As for how to prune it, it depends upon whether you are keeping it as a shrub shape or a tree.
